Saudi Arabia is Building One of the World's Biggest Green Hydrogen Plants
Hydrogen is morphing from a niche power source — used in zeppelins, rockets and nuclear weapons — into big business, with the European Union alone committing $500 billion to scale up its infrastructure. Huge obstacles remain to the gas becoming a major part of the energy transition, and skeptics point to Saudi Arabia’s weak track record so far capitalizing on what should be a competitive edge in the renewables business, especially solar, where there are many plans but few operational projects.
But countries are jostling for position in a future global market, and hydrogen experts list the kingdom as one to watch.

What Is Green Hydrogen And Will It Power The Future?
Hydrogen is a clean-burning molecule, meaning that it can help to decarbonize a range of sectors that have proved hard to clean up in the past. But today, most hydrogen is produced from CO2-emitting fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, known as green hydrogen, could be the solution to cutting our carbon footprint. But first, it must overcome a number of challenges.

Hydrogen presents an eco-friendly, regenerative and sustainable energy source and is an ideal replacement for fossil fuels in the transportation sector.
Environmental concerns have focused research and development efforts on hydrogen as an alternative fuel to power the needs of our daily lives. For example, in electric vehicles, it is used to run fuel cells which convert the gas efficiently into electrical energy.
Ever wondered how a hydrogen fuel system works? Here's a quick breakdown:
1. Hydrogen is stored in Luxfer’s multi-cylinder system, located at the rear of the bus. It is regulated to low pressure and feeds an adjacent onboard fuel cell.
2. The hydrogen passes along the surface of the fuel cell membrane, splitting into protons and electrons that create an electric current. This combines with oxygen from atmospheric air to form water (the only by-product)
3. This electric energy charges a battery pack, which is placed beneath the bus floor
4. The bus is driven by a compact electric motor that draws on the battery as needed.
